Because humans were hunter-gatherers for hundreds of thousands of years, we evolved to use and favor the diverse plant and rich meat intake of our hunting and foraging history. Farming and its core crops (e.g. grains), by contrast, only came on the scene approximately 10,000 years ago and took at least 8000 of those years to spread across the world. Our evolutionary roots—and residual genetic expectations—favor the nutritional practices of our hunter-gatherer legacy. (For more on the history of the paleo diet, click here.)
Don’t let the fact that these cookies are Paleo make you think they don’t taste good. These are now my very favorite cookie! They taste like a legit cookie you would get at a bakery. Crispy on the outer edges, just the slightest bit soft and gooey in the center. And since there is no flour, the cookie has an intense almond butter flavor that I can’t get enough of.

This recipe was the hands down winner. It was contestant “D” of A-D. My husband had decided on B, I think, until he tried these and he declared this recipe the winner on the spot. I tried them and agreed. I now feel sick from trying all of these cookies, but I can give this recipe the thumbs up all around from my household! The cookie party ladies will hopefully appreciate all of my research. :) In all seriousness, if you need a low-allergen, “healthier” choc chip cookie recipe that won’t fail, this is the one. Winner-winner, choc chip cookie dinner! (Which is what I had tonight… vurp…)

I gave up paleo baking six months ago when I devoted myself to the 20lb subscription of Better Batter, but you’ve got me re-upping on my almond flour and coconut flour stock, opening my kitchen (and my heart) to paleo baking once again. These look amazing- I always had my paleo chocolate chippers turn out like some kind of sad, crumbly macaroon, but I trust that my children will be happy to share these with their friends. Thank you!

So happy to hear you enjoyed the cookies, Jane! Coconut sugar is one of my favorites, and has a very low glycemic index so it doesn’t spike your blood sugar too much. It is a bit sweet, so you can definitely cut down on the sugar next time you make them if you taste buds prefer. Thanks so much for subscribing, I hope you find lots of recipes here to love.
Fruit: nature’s sugar. As such, it’s far preferable to refined sugars and sugar products, but it’s also chock-full of fructose and therefore meant to be consumed in moderation. Still, fruit makes the basis of some awesome Paleo desserts and snacks. Consume one to three servings of fruit a day and limit high-sugar fruits to special indulgences. It’s also more beneficial to consume fruits in their raw, unaltered form—but we love smoothies, too.
Bake the cookies. Place the baking sheets, one at a time, in the center of the preheated oven and bake until lightly golden brown all over and mostly set toward the center (about 14 minutes). Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely on the baking sheet (about 10 minutes). They will become more firm as they cool. Store any leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator or freezer.
These turned out great! Usually my mom hates gluten free cookies I make but she approves of these lol. Also I deviated from the recipe a bit, added a little less baking soda and cut the almond butter with cashew butter thanks to winco allowing me to get small amounts of the nut butters without having to pay for the whole container. Thanks for the recipie! Oh and also added a smidgen of cinnamon – tastes like molasses cookies!!

As discussed in my article questioning nut consumption on a Paleo diet, macadamia nuts are probably the healthiest nuts available because of their high monounsaturated and low polyunsaturated fat content as well as their low levels of anti-nutrients. They can thus be enjoyed without guilt. This hummus recipe is great with anything where you would normally use regular hummus or Baba Ghanoush.

Legumes – beans, lentils, chickpeas and so on. Cashews are not legumes! There are some debates over whether some legumes are safe to consume in moderation, if prepared properly (soaked for 12 hours and then cooked really well to remove the phytic acid and make them easier to digest). You can read this article by Dr. Chris Kresser and this article by Dr. Loren Cordain and make up your own mind like we do. We include green beans and peas but avoid the rest.
If you’re craving pasta, veggie noodles, also known as zoodles, will be your fix. Veggie noodles are basically just vegetables, most often zucchini, squash, and sweet potato, that are cut or spiraled to create a noodle-like texture and shape. Since Paleo is such a big health movement right now, veggie noodles can be found at most supermarkets, but Whole Foods has pre-spiraled and prepackaged options that make for a quick low-stress meal. Vegetables are a main staple in the Paleo diet and for good reason. They are full of vitamins and leave you feeling satisfied.
Wow, these look fantastic…definitely need to make these! I had bad cravings last night and I solved with almonds and raisins, plus a little coconut butter. Probably too many of each of these but it tasted good! Having these cookies in the freezer would have been perfect…I need to get it in my head that cravings will happen and I need to prepare, because usually I end up scrounging whatever sweet thing I can find!
Eggplants are Paleo friendly for most, but store-bought baba ghanoush can still contain loads of hidden mayo—and that can mean unwanted vegetable oils. Go for a simple, mayo-free recipe with lots of garlic and a squeeze of lemon juice for a fresher take that won’t weigh you down. Try pairing this dip with some Paleo-friendly homemade rosemary sesame crackers.
Your Gut Health. A critical review(Valle G et al, 2017 ) evaluating paleo’s effect on the human gut microbiome in both hunter-gatherers and modern adherents concluded that a paleolithic template is connected to enhancing healthier and more diverse gut bacteria, as opposed to those that follow the Standard American Diets (Conlon & Bird, 2014).Why does this matter? You gut microbiome is made up of trillions of bacteria (both good and bad) that has a major influence on your metabolism, hormones, digestion, immune system and mood.

This might be the healthiest recipe for nachos you’ll ever see, with apples standing in for tortilla chips, and healthy toppings. Of course it won’t replicate the savory and spicy joy of nachos, but they’re going for more of a salty, chocolatey, sweet experience with these, and mostly just referring to the way nachos are presented. The use of coconut, almond butter, and almonds means you’re going to get a nice nutty, crunchy, and sweet taste with each bite, making this a fun snack for movie night or anytime really.
